Once you enter East Asian entertainment, it is a whole different world.  That is, in terms of body and weight… an extremely sensitive issue in America.

America has always been one to abstain from criticizing people about their weight and body shape.  In fact, there are many famous plus sized entertainers.  For instance, we have Queen Latifah and America Ferrera, among other plus sized stars.  Even on shows, like American Idol, we make it a point not to judge contestants by their size, but rather their talent.

In Taiwan, there is a singing competition show called 超級星光大道 One Million Star, which is like the asian version of American Idol.  Last week was the premiere of Season 6 and many, many people auditioned for the show.  One contestant was slightly out of shape (at least by Taiwan standards) and was told to lose weight if she wanted to continue competing.  I was shocked.  How can a judge say that to the poor girl on camera????  And there was even a specialist telling her how difficult it would be for her to lose weight (that’s right, I’m talking about Roger).  I thought the girl would be angry and retaliate.  Instead, she said that she knew and was already on a diet.  This happened at least twice more on the airing (including one girl that was on the 11/13 episode).

As it turns out, this is fairly… natural in east Asian countries.  Natural that you have to have practically a size 0 waistline and be wholesomely small and petite.  Maybe it’s the fact that I’m an ABC and don’t get it, but seriously, like why does every girl have to be so small and skinny?  What’s wrong with a little shape and curves on a girl’s body?

In a way, this idea explains why so many female Taiwanese stars are so skinny.  Compared to these Taiwanese girls, American entertainers are “fat.”  For example, Scarlett Johansson is considered skinny here, right?  Well, she would be dubbed “too fat” in Taiwan and other east Asian countries.  Here are examples of what the Taiwan industry would say is the perfect body shape and size.  Keep in mind that the camera usually adds 10 lbs…

Yes.  I know.  They are indeed the dream size we all wish we were.  Even if I lose 30, 40 lbs, I could never match their body size.  *sigh*  Well, actually, personally I like the healthy look.  Imagine when Brooke Shields was a young, teen model.  That’s what I want to look like.  It just disappoints me to see stars succumb to the business by losing tons of weight.  Just take Hilary Duff and Lindsay Lohan as examples.  In the asian world, I’m very disappointed in 林依晨 Ariel Lin.  She was my idol because she was the exemplary size.  She was skinny, but not to the point of being just bone.  I guess you can say she used to be chubby.  But recent pictures of her show that she has turned into another skinny Taiwanese girl.  What made her lose the weight?  I have no idea.  But the Taiwanese industry certainly won’t question the lost, they probably embraced her newfound “skinniness.”  Another girl to accept into their circle of “skinny bitches.”  And please don’t get me wrong, I love the music these people make and they have great personalities, but I just think the body image message they are sending out is just inappropriate.

This is 林依晨 Ariel Lin before (notice how she is skinny, but not as skinny as the other girls you saw previously) :

Please think about this.  Body image and self-content with it should be totally up to you.  Do not let the media or society influence how you look, or how you view yourself.  Feel comfortable in your own skin, and do your body a favor.  That’s all there is to it.

FOB

I’ve never hated Asian girls so much in my life before.  I know I sound crazy to you right now (and maybe even a little weird), but I will make sense after you hear what I have to say.
Now, I, of course, know this topic very well because I am an, well, Asian girl myself.  You see, I’ve met a number of stereotypical Asian girls, and by stereotypical, I mean the ones who tend to form cliches and giggle uncontrollably while calling themselves cute… and doing the FOB pose every 5 seconds.  Come on, isn’t this silly AND annoying?  I have always disliked girls who act way to “girly girly” and ultimately “dumb”.  Like, who are they trying to impress with the dumb girl act?  What I’m saying now refers to ALL people, not just Asian girls.  Unless you are one of those people I’m talking about, is there no common sense to what I’m saying?
Back to the “asian-cliche-girls”… I hate when they just form their own tight little circle and link arms and giggle about another girl’s “kawaii” skirt.  It’s disgusting to see teenage girls act like they are freakin’ 5 years old with the whole cute act!!!!!!  Seriously, if you’re 17, then act like a 17 year old, DON’T revert back to being the little 4 feet princess you were when you were 5!  Because you know what?  It’s NOT cute anymore!  Sometimes, the whole cute thing can even lead to looking like a slut (look at the featured photo).  When a girl is that desperate to be kawaii and fobbish, they just come out looking like they walked out of a porn film.
As for the asian guys, I’m totally surprised that they enjoy this kawaii act.  Actually, I’m not totally surprised because for most guys, the cosplay and slut look is acceptable, right?  Whatever.  When it comes to guys, I’m clueless.
Surely there are exceptions to this rule.  Some girls just naturally have that cute anime look and some guys don’t like slutty girls.  But I’m accounting for the majority of what I have seen.
Yes, I am venting… but I cannot tell you why (I’m clueless myself!).  I just hope you come to this realization as well and either don’t do it (b/c it pisses certain people off) or stop with the whole act now (b/c you’ve already pissed a certain number of people off).  I rest my case.

Is she FULLY caucasian?

Is she FULLY caucasian?

You’re on the streets, perhaps going to get a cup of coffee from Starbucks, or to go to the bookstore to pick out a nice read.  On your way there, you look about you.  There’s a black guy and a white girl holding hands.  At the next street corner, an Indian is embracing a Korean.  And as you are about to cross the street, the couple in front of you is a white guy and a Chinese girl cooing at their CaucAsian newborn.

Let’s face it.  The 21st century (and centuries to come!) is all about mixed race couples.  Many, many ages ago, mixed race relationships were shocking to society and they would cause people to gasp and point.  Even the innocent mixed race child was being gossiped about and most importantly, shunned by society.  Nowadays, the concept is widely accepted.

Mixed races are absolutely beautiful to me.  In the past few years, I’ve been noticing quite a number of mixed race celebrities.  Have you seen them????  Not to favor asians or anything, but the asian mixes are so cute when they’re babies and really pretty when they get older.  Here are some examples of notable mixed races (some of them are just really good looking, be it girl or guy).

Tiffany Xu 許瑋甯

Tiffany Xu 許瑋甯

Tiffany Xu 許瑋甯

Tiffany Xu 許瑋甯

Both photos above are of Tiffany Xu 許瑋甯.  She’s the offspring of an Italian father and a Chinese mother.  She made appearances in notable dramas such as Magic Ring, It Started with a Kiss, They Kiss Again, and ToGetHer.  She was also in Wang Lee Hom’s music video for Xin Zhong De Re Yue (Shangri-La).  And she’s currently dating Taiwan’s rising star, Ethan Ruan.  Personally, I think Tiffany Xu is really beautiful and almost completely caucasian looking.  When I first saw her in Lee Hom’s video and in ISWAK, I thought she was a caucasian who spoke mandarin.  But apparently, she was raised in Taiwan and she’s half and half.  Doesn’t her mixed-ness deceive you?  Just a little?

Moving on, here’s another example of a mixed celebrity.

Shirota Yuu しろた ゆう

My 2nd example is the guy in the above 3 photos.  He’s Shirota Yuu しろた ゆう.  I first saw him in the Japanese drama Hanazakari no Kimitachi e.  When I first saw him play Kagurazaka Makoto, I thought it was a white guy playing him.  So, I researched this guy and found out that the reason he looked white was because (as I had suspected) he was a halfie.  Yep, Shirota Yuu しろた ゆう is half Japanese from his father’s side, and half Spanish from his mother’s side.  In fact, he can also speak Spanish in addition to Japanese, due to the fact that he lived in Barcelona for a little bit as a child.  Isn’t Shirota Yuu しろた ゆう really handsome???  Haha,,, I still can’t believe he’s half Spanish…

My 3rd example is this guy below.

Wentz Eiji ウエンツ瑛士

Okay, seriously, doesn’t this guy above, Wentz Eiji ウエンツ瑛士, look American/European?  I had no idea he was Japanese at all when I saw him in Nodame Cantabile.  It was quite a shocker when I found out he was half German-American (from his father’s side) and half Japanese (from his mother’s side).  He’s known for being the half American who can only speak Japanese.  But wow, he looks fully American to me as well.  Would you think he was Japanese just from looking at him???

My 4th and final example is this lovely girl below.

Lara Veronin 梁心頤

Lara Veronin 梁心頤

She is Lara Veronin 梁心頤, the lead female vocalist of the band Nan Quan Mama.  She’s Russian-Taiwanese-American.  I don’t know much about her, but the fact that she’s a halfie strikes me.  Indeed, the is very pretty, don’t you think?

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆

I’ve also been told that Dennis Oh and Daniel Henney are half Korean and half American.  I’ve seen them and they are also very handsome mixes, in addition to Tiffany Xu, Shirota Yuu, Wentz Eiji, and Lara Veronin.  These are the famous mixes that I know of and I happen to think that asian/european mixes are very very pretty.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆

When it comes to my future, I’m curious as to what I will do.  I have the option of marrying Chinese (or any asian for that matter) or marrying European.  In one case, I’ll have ethnic children, in the other case, I’ll have mixed children.  I’m not sure right now, but I’m leaning towards the Eurasian side.  I guess it’ll all depend on where life takes me, but for now, all I can do is hope that I can find a great guy in the future. 😉

My question is HOW in the world did Jessica Simpson get skinny so quickly?????  It was about a month or so ago that I found out that Jessica gained weight.  And just recently, I saw on a magazine cover that she had lost weight and was back to her old weight again.  Last time I checked, people don’t lose weight that fast.  Losing a lot of weight is a difficult thing and sometimes people can’t handle it anymore and resort to eating again!… And then gaining more weight!  I’m having my doubts about Jessica’s “weight loss solution”.  Honestly, I believe she starved herself.  That is the only way a person could lose weight that fast.  If you take a look at the photo I included above, you’ll see a comparison of Fat Jessica and Skinny Jessica.  You see all the fat she trimmed off of her body?  EXACTLY.  How does one shed fat off so easily?

She’s taking the media on a roller coaster. *rolls eyes* This whole weight gaining/losing thing is pissing me off these days.  It seems like it’s all the media talks about… “blah blah blah… ___ lost weight, is she anorexic???” or “______ is fat!”  Who cares if they gain or lose weight????  It’s their issue so let them deal with it!  Jeezzz…

Today, beauty is beyond overrated…  Don’t you agree?  In fact, today, I logged onto my gmail account and there was a headline that caught my attention from CNN.  It was about this company that was trying to sell people beauty products to sell to other people so that they could profit.  And people were actually doing this!  Money aside, these products were stuff such as “it’ll make you look younger” and “look skinny without dieting” things.  That just drove me insane to see people profiting from the society’s obsession with aesthetics!  Honestly, I don’t understand this obsession to look like celebrities from Hollywood.  What happened to trying to keep it organic and natural????  And for this reason, I’ve stopped keeping up with Hollywood.  It’s getting ridiculous by the years.  People are trying to look like Lindsey Lohan, or Angelina Jolie, or even Miley Cyrus!  So, they try to thin themselves, aka anorexia, and put on tons of makeup to hide certain marks on their face.  I don’t want to hear about this useless stuff.  SO, instead, I pay more attention to the Asian world! Haha… Yep!  Not that all asians are natural and beautiful, but my idol is 구혜선 Goo Hye Sun.  If you look below, you’ll see a lovely picture of her.

Goo Hye Sun

She’s a South Korean actress, author, artist, director and singer.  ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!!!!! She’s THE most talented Asian actress that I know of.  I found about her after watching the popular Korean drama 꽃보다 남자 Boys Over Flowers.  As I was watching it, I was thinking “WHAT an amazing actress!!!”  So I found out more about her and now I think she’s the most talented person ever.  Here’s what I gathered about her:

1. Acted in 8 dramas to date.

2. Was in 2 films, one of which she self-directed.

3. Starred in 4 music videos.

4. Wrote a critically acclaimed book “Tango” 탱고 that sold 30,000 copies in its first week.

5. Illustrated Gummy’s Album which was released in 2008.

6. Has her own Art Exhibition.

7. Sang the title song of the Pure in Heart drama and Shim Soo Bong’s “I Don’t Know Anything But Love” in BOF.

8. Acted in the Korean version of the musical Grease as Sandy and sang Summer Nights (I only saw her sing the Summer Nights part on a youtube video).

9. She plays the piano beautifully and can sing while she plays.

10. She won 3 awards.

Really talented, right?  In addition, she has a natural beauty to her.  She’s one of those people who look amazing even without make-up.  And on top of everything, she’s only 24.  So young, but so successful already!  That’s why she’s my idol.  I look up to her and her achievements.  Hopefully, I can be someone like her in the near future.  😀

Circle lenses

So, these past few days, I’ve been hearing a lot about these “Circle Lenses”.  It’s on Facebook, the street, advertised on the web, practically EVERYWHERE!!!!!  Omg, it’s seriously driving me crazy.  For those of you who are not familiar with Circle Contact Lens, it is a product famous with East Asians.  It was developed in South Korea and is made so that when people put it in, their irises look bigger, giving the person an Ulzzang or Kawaii look.  In layman terms, the person looks like a doll: big colorful eyes, a small nose and mouth, and fair skin.  Currently, many of those East Asian celebs use them.  For example, Angela Zhang, Ayumi Hamasaki, (possibly) Cyndi Wang, and much more.

Now I have to admit, these contacts do make Asian girls look “cuter”(Ulzzang/Kawaii), more “attractive”, and more like Anime characters, but I just think this is silly.  Asians are characterized by their beautifully almond shaped eyes, not big European eyes.  I mean, it all comes down to this fact that Asians are trying to be more European.  They simply want the big round eyes!  It can’t be denied any longer now that there is also this… this… creation!  It’s so upsetting to see these actresses, that girls look up to, get caught into this tangle of europeanization.  By using this product, it makes these actresses emphasize beauty, and essentially, fans see this!  This is why we have so many girls out there who want to “disown” their natural beauty for “White eyes”.  Me, I’m a glasses wearer and don’t have contacts.  But even if i chose to wear contacts one day, I’d never choose Circle Contact Lens.  This invention of contact lenses was made for people who find glasses very uncomfortable in situations such as sports.  But to go as far as also making them so that their eyes look bigger as well  is ridiculous to me.  I don’t see why our Asian eyes have to be made bigger and more colorful…  We are Asian, have almond eyes, with a dark brown color to them.  Why change that so that our eyes are big like Europeans, and have colors such as blue, green, purple, etc. that simply do not make up our Asian genes?

I’m a believer in natural beauty.  Even if someone is ugly, they can be made beautiful without all the nonsense of plastic surgery and “circle lenses”.  I am especially disappointed to see Asians change their natural look…  We simply are not Europeans.  We shouldn’t have to change the way we look in order to resemble the Europeans.  Yes, Europeans are beautiful, but so are Asians.
