I feel like I am living in a dream.

From last night, I have been wandering beyond.

Still wondering where I am.

Whether or not this is a good dream, I cannot tell.

We had a conversation where we said all that needed to be said.

So real that I woke up and wondered how I was sleeping the whole time.

You were not there- confusing me.

Throughout the day, I continued to float on the cloud you put me on.

Sunset time, I looked out the window and found myself surrounded by fluff.

Big, puffy cotton balls were glowing in a sea of pinks and purples.

Again, I wondered if this was real.

It felt like I was floating off to some magical place.

I almost expected unicorns to appear.

The sea of pink and purple eventually turned into a deep, sparkling blue.

Shades of blue swirled around me.

Today was beautiful, so dream-like.

The dream started when you unexpectedly appeared in my sleep last night.

Can this dream never end?

Drowsiness is hitting me, snapping me back to reality.

Perhaps I will have a déjà vu of today some time in the near future.

May I have more sweet dreams tonight,

And tomorrow night,

Forever.

A Beautiful Disaster

After watching 아름답다 Beautiful (2008) and 富江 Tomie (1999), I wonder if there really exists beauty so powerful that it is a curse rather than a gift.

In “Beautiful,” a young woman is so beautiful that her looks draw unwanted attention from men and make women jealous.  Her beauty eventually leads her to be raped by one of her stalkers.  Violated and traumatized by the attack, she binges on food in hopes of becoming fat and then starves herself making her unattractively thin.  Similarly, “Tomie” tells the story of a high-school girl who is the living embodiment of lust.  She possesses the power to make people fall in love with her and emotionally manipulates men into brutal acts of violence.  And get this… men AND women are driven into jealous rages over her.

Now, society has always glamorized beauty since the birth of time.  Being beautiful is almost everyone’s priority… obsession… There are girls out there who dream of looking sexy and charming and to accomplish that dream, they starve themselves.  But let’s backtrack for a moment and consider what’s beautiful.  To society, being beautiful means being thin, tall, having long legs, a natural tan, long flowing hair, a clear complexion, etc.  Doesn’t the “perfection” of all of this creep you out, just a little bit?  As I ponder more and more about “beauty,” there is something eery about the whole idea.  Beauty is something that is so powerful that it can control people… and clearly, the damn thing is just a concept.

I have never really thought about beauty as a negative aspect of a person.  But I have come to see that beauty can be very scary.  My question is, does this sort of evil beauty really exist?  Beauty can get to the level that is demonstrated in “Beautiful” and “Tomie,” but is such a horror really existent in our society?

To date, I have not come across anyone so stunning that men and women are driven crazy and into jealous rages.  Can we really imagine such a beauty among us?  Being beautiful has always been seen as a virtue so it’s hard to imagine that anyone “blessed” with it would complain.  But seeing what beauty did to the woman in “Beautiful” is terrible.  Women were jealous of her looks and her charm that stole their men’s hearts.  On the other hand, men could not get enough of her… to the point of stalking her and raping her.  Looking beautiful is one thing, but having it control your life and toss you in an emotional roller coaster is another.  As for Tomie, she is so beautiful that she is able to use her looks to manipulate men into committing acts of horrifying violence and making men fight  (and kill) each other for her.

Essentially, what I am trying to say is that beauty is overrated and that it is not as glamourous as it appears.  Like everything else in this society, beauty has a downside, aka an evil side.  Being charming and sexy is something to look out for… it has the power to eat away at our lives and turn us into beasts.  Usually, people overlook the power of beauty.  We think that only our natural instincts for survival can bring out our inner beast.  It is important to note that beauty can have the same effect on us.

“Beauty is a wild rose, mysterious and charming, but willing to draw blood in its defense.”

Beautiful Getaway?

Lately, I feel like I’ve been flooded with schoolwork.  Tests, quizzes, homework, SAT’s, projects, and essays… basically, things that suck the soul out of people.  So, today, as I was studying for my Physics exam tomorrow, I began to think about the perfect getaway.

Capri was the first place that came into my mind.  I suddenly remembered the 8th grade Italian projects we had to do in class.  Though I did Genoa, I distinctly recall being captivated by the Capri project.

Capri is a tiny island off the coast of Italy.  It is known for its perfect honeymoon spot and its beautifully crystal clear waters and grotto.  I could not help but close my eyes and imagine myself on a little boat in the clear blue waters feeling the gentle breeze that holds a hint of a watery smell.  Very refreshing indeed.

Even though I am not a big fan of being in water, I enjoy the thought of being near water.  And Capri is a great spot because it is so… clean looking!  I almost feel refreshed just looking at pictures of Capri.  Maybe, in the future, I’ll get married, or have my honeymoon in Capri, the perfect vacation getaway…  away from stress, work, and life.  *ahhhhhhh*

Today, beauty is beyond overrated…  Don’t you agree?  In fact, today, I logged onto my gmail account and there was a headline that caught my attention from CNN.  It was about this company that was trying to sell people beauty products to sell to other people so that they could profit.  And people were actually doing this!  Money aside, these products were stuff such as “it’ll make you look younger” and “look skinny without dieting” things.  That just drove me insane to see people profiting from the society’s obsession with aesthetics!  Honestly, I don’t understand this obsession to look like celebrities from Hollywood.  What happened to trying to keep it organic and natural????  And for this reason, I’ve stopped keeping up with Hollywood.  It’s getting ridiculous by the years.  People are trying to look like Lindsey Lohan, or Angelina Jolie, or even Miley Cyrus!  So, they try to thin themselves, aka anorexia, and put on tons of makeup to hide certain marks on their face.  I don’t want to hear about this useless stuff.  SO, instead, I pay more attention to the Asian world! Haha… Yep!  Not that all asians are natural and beautiful, but my idol is 구혜선 Goo Hye Sun.  If you look below, you’ll see a lovely picture of her.

Goo Hye Sun

She’s a South Korean actress, author, artist, director and singer.  ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!!!!! She’s THE most talented Asian actress that I know of.  I found about her after watching the popular Korean drama 꽃보다 남자 Boys Over Flowers.  As I was watching it, I was thinking “WHAT an amazing actress!!!”  So I found out more about her and now I think she’s the most talented person ever.  Here’s what I gathered about her:

1. Acted in 8 dramas to date.

2. Was in 2 films, one of which she self-directed.

3. Starred in 4 music videos.

4. Wrote a critically acclaimed book “Tango” 탱고 that sold 30,000 copies in its first week.

5. Illustrated Gummy’s Album which was released in 2008.

6. Has her own Art Exhibition.

7. Sang the title song of the Pure in Heart drama and Shim Soo Bong’s “I Don’t Know Anything But Love” in BOF.

8. Acted in the Korean version of the musical Grease as Sandy and sang Summer Nights (I only saw her sing the Summer Nights part on a youtube video).

9. She plays the piano beautifully and can sing while she plays.

10. She won 3 awards.

Really talented, right?  In addition, she has a natural beauty to her.  She’s one of those people who look amazing even without make-up.  And on top of everything, she’s only 24.  So young, but so successful already!  That’s why she’s my idol.  I look up to her and her achievements.  Hopefully, I can be someone like her in the near future.  😀
